Password reset for system preferences.

The login password I set also is used to open items in system preferences. I changed it where I didn’t need it for login but for use on system preferences only. Now I have forgotten it, and can’t open any system preferences. It was not my Apple ID login.

How can I change it without knowing the original password?

Hey there, leah4435!

From your post, it sounds like you are having issues with the password that controls your System Preferences app. We’re glad that you reached out to the Apple Support Communities. We want to try and help you find the answers you need.

To verify, have you tried inputting the same login password that is used when you initially power on your Mac and sign in to your user name? If not, please try that. If you have your Mac set for automatic login, you can follow this guide for what to do If you forgot your Mac login password. We hope this information helps you out.

Take care!
