My iPad mini can't be used as a phone?

Hello, I went to the AT&T store to transfer my daughters phone sim card to her new mini ipad and the associate told me that she could not use her mini ipad as a phone. We did buy the one which has Wifi & Cellular use. Is he correct?

The iPad by itself can not make cellular calls, no. He is correct. It can receive FaceTime audio and video calls, but that is going to be the extent of it, unless the user also has an iPhone. If that is the case, then yes, calls can be routed from the Phone to the iPad via a continuity features baked into the operating system of each device. That also includes text messaging. The iPad can use iMessage by itself, but can not send SMS messages to android or other device users, without an iPhone as a piggy back like mechanism.

Yes.

That IS correct.

No iPad is an iPhone/smart phone.

NO iPad can make cellular phone calls.

Sorry.

The WiFi and cellular model iPads are for cellular data ONLY and also for use as a precise GPS device.

To make cell calls via an iPad, you need an iPhone pair/tethered to an iPad.

In this scenario, the iPad just acts a giant remote device to the iPad.

Same goes for SMS messaging to other devices, other than Apple devices.

You need to have a iPad paired/tethered to an iPhone to be able to send SMS messages to other non-Apple product users.

Sorry.
