Scanner Failure to open a connection (-21345) Error

Big Sur 11.6 was supposed to fix the Failure to Connect error with scanners.

I had been using my scanner successfully with Image Capture but now after updating to OS 11.6 my connection is broken. Anyone else with this issue or a solution?

Just for the record I'm using a network WiFi connected Brother MFC-L2750DW.

I had a chance to use Safe Mode today. Here's what happened:

-After starting in safe mode, everything worked as expected. Image Capture was able to connect to the scanner without any issues.

-I then started the VPN software, still in safe mode, and the scanner still operated properly.

-I removed *all* Login items from my profile and rebooted normally.

-Image Capture worked normally.

-I then started the VPN software and I again got the Unable to Connect to scanner error message.

-I turned off the VPN without quitting the software, and Image Capture again connected and scanned normally

Clearly the VPN software has something to do with this problem, but it can't be unique to this software because the scanner and VPN worked fine together when in safe mode. This leads me to conclude (with my limited knowledge) that there is some conflict again. What are your thoughts?

Well, I got it to work, so here's a crazy one. I had to turn off my VPN for it to make a connection with the scanner. Once the connection is established it scans perfectly as long as the VPN is off. I doubt this is a problem with the VPN software I'm using because it happens only on this one computer, others on the network work just fine with the same configurations. I will try to uninstall the VPN software then reinstall it. Or I can switch to the native VPN app.

If there are any other ideas out there as to why this would happen I'd really like to hear them.

Thanks.

I use the witopia personalVPN app, each computer connects when the app opens as part of the startup (it’s a login item for each user). The scanner is part of an all-in-one print-fax-scan Brother MFC-L2750DW connected to the network via wifi so I can use AirPrint from mobile devices. It is not connected to the vpn. The printer always worked, never an issue. The scanning is the only function with a problem, and only with the one iMac. All the mobile devices work with the scanner whether or not the vpn is on with that device.

Thanks for your help.

Here's some food for thought: unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they are useless from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private. and Former Malware Distributor Kape Technologies Now Owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, Zenmate, and a Collection of VPN “Review” WebsitesThat being said one of the most respected contributors to these forums and a respected developer has said good things about NordVPN.  So it may be more secure than most of the other public VPNs.

So if I were to be having connection problems the VPN software would be the first I'd uninstall according to the developer's instructions to see how it affects the problem.

Also, Have you installed or run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" or anti-virus apps on your Mac?

OT: Thanks for the links on VPN, they are interesting. I have been considering adding a physical firewall to my network, maybe that's a better solution.

Regarding your question on cleaning, optimizing and speed-up or antivirus apps, I have in the past used Mac Paw's CleanMyMac, which I know has many detractors on these pages. I am no longer using it and have not been since OS10 Mojave. I do use Malwarebytes occasionally to check for, well, malware.

I don't have problems connecting the VPN, only to the scanner when VPN is running. I have tried reinstalling the software but it did not fix the problem. I could try removing it completely but not sure what I would learn as the problem goes away when it is turned off anyway. Maybe I'm missing your point here.

When turned off there are still files getting loaded and running in the background. The only way to test if an app is contributing to the problem is to uninstall it completely.

Depending on the router you're behind you should be well protected. If you're out and about with a portable Mac using public WiFi then you definitely want to fire up the built-in Firewall in the System/Security & Privacy preference pant

I see that. But the other macs on my network work just fine with the vpn running. It seems as though it is not simply the vpn software on its own, but a combination of things, like the extension conflicts we used to get in the pre Intel days. I’ve tried cleaning up some legacy items in the library, but there are a lot of files there….I probably need a clean system install. Sigh.

Are the other Macs on the system configured "exactly" like the problem Mac?

Try the following: boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

This will prevent any 3rd party software from launching so you can see if any of the 3rd party software is part of the problem.
