homepod makes loud pop and disconnects from AirPlay after upgrading to iOS 15

I upgraded my HomePod to iOS 15 and since then have had an issue with it making a loud popping noise (loud enough to wake my dog) and then disconnect from my iPad. I am using AirPlay and connect to both HomePod and HomePod mini. All devices are running current iOS 15 versions. There is no issue with the mini. I am able to reconnect the HomePod after about 3 minutes.

Anyone else having this issue.

HomePod, 15

I have the exact same issue and hopefully the info below will help for clarification of a potential hardware issue your HomePod.

With the popping sound and then the HomePod disconnecting and resetting itself after 2-3 minutes it is best to check on the iPhone, the HomePod been set up with, for a possible hardware issue.

Using your iPhone you can do this by:

1.Going into the Home App, selecting the HomePod that makes the popping sound by pressing your finger onto its icon and it will open the settings for this HomePod.

2.Scroll to the bottom and on the right there will be a grey cog icon (the HomePod's settings) and tap on this.

3.Another menu will pop up with all the various settings for the HomePod but you need to scroll down to Analytics and Improvements and tap on this menu.

4.There will be another menu that reads Analytics Data and you need to tap on this. This menu will then show lines of text of what the HomePod does when running in the background. You need to look at a line that starts panic-full (you should see the date(s) of when the popping occurs and there will be a time recorded which will match up to when the popping sound and disconnect happens.

My HomePod has just done 2 separate popping noises and then reconnected to my iPhone. In my Analytics Data is shows the following:

panic-full-2021-11-18-121115

panic-full-2021-11-18-121434

Those figures that read 121115 or 121434 means time recorded of 12:11pm (and 15 seconds) or 12:14pm (and 34 seconds) which is approximately 3 minutes between each popping noise, disconnect and then reconnection.

No amount of resetting/unpairing with the HomeApp will change this. Sadly, it is a hardware issue and the only way forward is to replace the HomePod if it's still in warranty/covered under consumer law that applies to the country it's been bought from or pay for an out of warranty replacement as long as the HomePod is in stock. If it doubt always seek advice at an Apple Store or call/chat with Apple Support. They are there to help...

So here is some bad news. I updated my homepod and homepod mini to iOS 15.2 and it does not resolve the issue with loud pop and disconnect. The volume turns off and the homepod disconnects from the streaming devise, in this case the iPad Pro and then about 5 seconds later, it pops, the + and - and the center touch circle get very bright and then it disconnects and I have to reset the device.

This is really a big issue for many people and Apple should focus on something that people use every day. Apple Music should be held hostage until this is fixed. Cancel apple music and lets see how long it take apple to get to a resolution.

Not sure how much attention this thread will get, as it’s been marked as “solved”, even though it clearly isn’t. Not that it helps others, but I can only give a “me too” on this one. I have two HomePods as a stereo pair and about a month ago (can’t remember exactly) I started getting this problem on the new speaker I bought in May 2021 and also once on the old speaker I have for years. Doesn’t have to be playing anything either. I called Apple and they said they weren’t aware of the problem and I should try plugging the speaker into a different socket (which I did) but the problem didn’t go away so I called again and this time I was asked to reset the speaker. However it started doing odd things when playing music, almost like it was playing two things at once, then I got a pop again and a restart on the old speaker. I might try and separate them and have them in different rooms and see if I still have the problem. It does seem like a software issue though…

I am from Germany and have 7 Homepods (the big ones) and bought them over the past three years. I really invested in these and set them up all over the house and use them with airplay over Ipad or Mac Mini or Iphone. The last one I bought shortly they decided to sunset them. This year the popping sound appeared on all 7 randomly but at least once a day. Very load sometimes even if they are not playing. This is very annoying and of course shows a malfuncion (either hard or software). I was a huge Apple supporter but now I am really considering to turn completely away from apple. Sorry: 7!!! Homepods with the same issue and no solution. Is this how Apple is supposed to tread customers? Thank you.

Software I reckon - never happened before tvOS 15

If the hardware can’t cope with the software, change the software to cope with the hardware

Or if it’s the firmware, update the firmware with a new patch

Perhaps they need two separate OS - one for mini and one for original (can’t see that happening though) - hopefully a revised OS update fix all round for all HomePods

It has to be firmware/software specific to the original HomePod. I'm sure Apple would like to see all those go away but the cost does not justify ignoring this issue and tossing the hardware.

I think, overall, iOS, tvOS is one of the buggiest releases I have seen. Issues across the board indicated it was not ready for primetime.

Having to reboot iPhone 12 so wireless charging starts working again, HomePod issues, tvOS gets confused and has to restart just to name a few of my issues.

Apple need to address this or the Apple Faithful will not standby much longer.

If you’re really concerned it might be best to turn off / unplug instead

I’ve also seen recently that if the software causes the pod to ‘brick’ then Apple must replace it regardless of warranty, which someone had achieved

Also, someone has emailed Tim Cook for a service program which might be gaining some traction - Google / search Reddit etc

I'm going to reopen the case again and ask the above

Wish me luck!
