Final Cut Pro X: Importing Captions

I am importing subtitles. There is an option for importing them ABSOLUTE or RELATIVE to the timeline.

What is the difference? Sometimes I need to adjust the movie by adding or removing time so that the timeline is in Sync.

Thanks.

In most cases, there will be no difference, because usually the timecode for the project starts at zero:

The only difference is when the timecode for the project doesn't start at zero.

If you choose "absolute", then there will be no "translation", e.g. it will use the exact timecode as stored in the caption.

If you choose "relative", it will be relative to the start of the project, i.e. "1 minute" will be translated as "1 minute into the project", so for example if the starting timecode is at one hour, the caption at one minute will appear at one hour and one minute.
