Lock screen black text on iPhone

The text, date and time, displayed on iPhone lock screen is supposed to automatically go white or black depending on the background image. However, short of an all white frame as background it remains white and UNREADABLE in bright light! Is there a way to force Apple's DEFECTIVE functioning here to make the text black? Or was it fixed by Apple in latest iOS versions?

Hi, I've tested with several images, all photos taken on phone, where the upper part of frame is blown out to nearly white and it does not cause the text to change to black in every case. Yet, a pure white frame image (also a photo taken with iPhone) does. Clearly it is not functioning correctly, nothing to do with user.
