Transfer ePubs and PDFs from Mac to iPhone on Books app

I heard that you can transfer ePubs and PDFs from Mac to iPhone via Airdrop. I find that I can do this, but the books don't stay on the phone when I'm away from the Mac. I had to put the ePubs in the Files folder, but they don't appear in Books. Am I doing this wrong?

Airdrop doesn't work from desktop to iPad I used to be able to transfer files from desktop to iPad with no problem. Now I have to "Move to iCloud to collaborate". When I accept, I can't find the file on iCloud. I've had to resort to emailing myself to get my file. I have the current iOS and OS on my devices.
