code to connect my wireless keyboard

My wireless keyboard disconnected from my mac, I changed the battery and it now wont pair. I turned the mac off and on (ctrl c) and then the mac asked me to input a code from the keyboard to complete the pairing. First time I've seen this so just want to check this is valid and I havent been hacked!
