time machine failing

Hi all. I've used time machine for years with no trouble. Now, it behaves as if it's backing up but it's only showing back up of like some megabytes?! I keep checking the contents against the actual internal hard drive and there are folders and docs missing from the back up

MacBook Air (2020 or later)

Drives can fail at anytime

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

You can always Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac, and see if it behaves correctly.
