Transfer Purchased songs to iPod Shuffle

I have literally thousands of songs I purchased from Apple over the years. I want to put music I PAID for on an iPod shuffle and on an iPod nano. I get a message that I can’t transfer the music from my computer to the iPod. What the heck happened? I’ve read about Apple Music and DRM and I don’t care. I paid literally thousands of dollars for the music in my library and I want to put it on an iPod and listen to it.
