An iPad becoming warm when processing CPU intensive tasks, such as some games, is not unusual. High screen brightness can also contribute to elevated temperatures.

Whilst the iPad may become very warm in use, it should not become uncomfortably hot to hold. If the iPad becomes very warm, the iPad may automatically reduce screen brightness, reduce performance or may even shut-down until the device cools. If you are using a case, removing the case can improve cooling.
