Buying new iPad older version

Is there anyway to guess how long the current older version of the iPad could last as far as being able to function on the newer platforms or whatever you call it in other words can I expect to get the usual lifespan out of it considering the upgrades and technology that are coming ?

iPad Air, iOS 12

that would depend on what iPad model you get. If you were to get the current base level iPad, which has the A13 Bionic chip, (Basically, it is an iPhone 11 on the inside) it will last a very long time. forexample, the iPhone 6s, the earliest supported iPhone model, has the A9 chip. Apple Removes for support at a maximum of 1 model per year, so at absolute complete minimum you are looking at 5-6 years, more likely 7-8 or even more.
