MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015 slowed down after updating and using CR3 files

Hi there,

I use the MacBook Pro for editing client images and have done for the last few years with no problem (other than the occasional scratch disk full error). I just got a canon R5 and it wouldn't load the .cr3 files. I then updated the operating system to Big Sur, but now it is just going so slow and I can't edit more than a couple of pictures at one time and even this takes forever. I'm losing my mind a little. Is there anything that I can do other than buy a new one?

Processor is: 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Memory is: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Wishing I was more techy right now!

Thanks in advance for any help.

More RAM will help only if the specific app requires a certain level you don't already have.

The OS is only as fast as the system you have, you don't download a faster OS.

What size internal drive do you have? For efficient operation, you need to leave approx. 15% unused at all times. If you have the 256GB flash you may be starved for space. No idea if that would cause your problems, but if a drive is full, or nearly so, it will often be sluggish.

Given you've upgraded to Big Sur, and knowing Big Sur is a bit ticky about proper drivers, I'd check with Canon for new Big Sur compatible firmware and/or software if you use theirs. Being a "new" camera, it may be too early for firmware updates.

This sounds like a Canon problem to me. Apple makes every effort toward compatibility, and does quite well at it, but it's the device maker's responsibility to supply what Big Sur needs in terms of drivers and firmware specific to their device..
