what is the latest macos i can install on a 2012 17" macbook pro

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250001761 shows for the MacBook Pro series it must be mid-2012 or later.

The last 17" models shipped early 2012. Thus it can't install Catalina.


Any hacks which allow it may result in graphics anomalies, excess processor and fan use, and tax the machine too much.


Apple did not release a screen close to 17" size until the 16" models of 2019. Which coincidentally shipped new when Apple had already released Catalina.

Verifying Catalina Installation:


I. Find the Model of your Mac:

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Select: About this Mac
  3. View: Third Line-Down


II. See if it is mentioned here: macOS Catalina is Compatible with these Computers - Apple Support


If it is not mentioned in that link, then installing it is just not an option. :(
