You need a working keyboard to upgrade/update your Mac.
If your Mac will not recognize a wireless keyboard, then you will have to borrow or buy a wired USB keyboard. I recommend that you buy a usb keyboard and mouse set - they are invaluable when trouble strikes, and they are inexpensive. Even a pc eyboard can work.

Simple, use ANY USB keyboard. It is wise to always have a USB keyboard and mouse on-hand for troubleshooting Bluetooth issues with your keyboard and mouse. I’ve had similar issues with an iMac recognizing Apple’s wired keyboard via USB connection. The only option I have found that works is to restart the machine using your mouse and sometimes changing the USB port your keyboard is plugged into. The USB keyboard usually starts working after a couple of tries. Sorry you’re experiencing this problem too. This is been a long-standing issue with Apple and that they have yet to issue a fix to address this issue after many years of use. Clearly not a big enough issue for Apple to care about.
How old is your Mac, i.e. year and model, and what system are you running on it?
If you plug in the charging cable from the keyboard to the Mac you can use is as a wired keyboard.
