Apple Watch family setup - Google Calendar
I have seen several questions on how to have a Google Calendar show up on an "standalone" Apple Watch, that is, an Apple Watch setup with Family Setup and NO dedicated iPhone. Even though I found many questions there were no detailed solutions.
When setting up an Apple Watch the regular way, you can have the Calendar app on the phone, sign in to the Google account and then, via the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, select all or some of the Google Calendars to sync to the Apple Watch calendar.
When the Apple Watch is setup with Family Setup, the above option is not available, rather, it appears only events in the Apple Watch user's iCloud account show up in the watch.
I believe I found a solution to have the Google Calendar events show up in the Family Setup watch. With this solution, the Google calendar events will show in read-only mode on the Apple watch. The solution requires getting the secret link to the Google Calendar and subscribing to it from the Apple Watch user's iCloud account. Below are detailed instructions:
Get the secret address to the Google Calendar
Accemss Google Calendar and get the secret address of the calendar you would like to show on the Apple Watch. Instructions
- On your computer, open Google Calendar.
- In the top right, click Settings and then again Settings.
- On the left panel, under “Settings for my calendars,” click the name of the calendar you want to use.
- Click Integrate calendar.
- In the "Secret address in iCal format" section, copy the link.
- Paste the link as directed by your other calendar application.
Subscribe to the Google Calendar by using Apple Calendar app on a Mac.
Note that the Mac MUST be signed in to the same iCloud account as the destination Apple Watch.
- On a Mac (Detailed instructions)
- In Calendar, choose File > New Calendar Subscription.
- Enter the calendar’s web address, then click Subscribe.
- Enter a name for the calendar and choose a color to help you identify it on your calendar.
- Choose iCloud from the Location menu, then click OK.
Note that subscribed calendars will NOT show on https://www.icloud.com/calendar/
Additionally, although it is possible to subscribe to a calendar url from an IOS device, apparently doing so will NOT sync the subscribed calendar to iCloud and therefore will NOT sync that subscribed calendar across devices. From the apple support post:
- Before you can see a calendar subscription on all your devices, subscribe to the calendar on your Mac first. If you subscribe to the calendar on your iOS device, iCloud won't update it to your other devices.
Did this work for others? Any other solutions to this?
