Here is document that tells you what are the IMAP settings and requirements to setup iCloud Mail in other apps than Mail.
Mail server settings for iCloud email clients - Apple Support (IE)
You need to use in-app specific password, as your iCloud Account password won't work.
Using app-specific passwords - Apple Support
If you still have issues, talk to GMail.app support.

See the instructions below from Google support: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6078445?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS#zippy=%2Cadd-an-account
(Note that you may need to have two-factor authentication turned on for your Apple ID and use an app-specific password as described in Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support and Using app-specific passwords - Apple Support )
Add an account
Tip: You can read and send mail from most email addresses using the Gmail app on iPhone or iPad, including Yahoo and Hotmail. Instead of forwarding your mail, you can add that account to the Gmail app.
Thank you for the response but Gmail app does allow for icloud accounts to be added. I have my gmail accounts added to the mail app on my phone but i don't like the app. I prefer the Gmail app. The gmail app is asking for an "app password."
It can handle other accounts too.

That is exactly right.
You cannot achieve what you want in the manner you’re trying to do it.
Good luck.

I now realize you meant “it” to refer to the gmail app. When you wrote this, I thought “it” referred to Apple’s Mail app, which was the last thing I had discussed. I thought you were simply repeating what I had said.
Thanks for the info.
The gmail application is set up to handle gmail accounts. Your iCloud account should be handled by Apple’s Mail app. And by the way, that app can handle gmail as well.
THANK YOU! I got it to work with you help of your response! Thank you again!
You are welcome. Glad I could help!
