Google services lag after Safari 15.0 update

After updating to Safari 15.0 all google services seem to lag. Google search on google.com works with problems - half page is displayed, another is blank, when you try to access some webpages, they don't open. Google Ads became very slow and you can't even sometimes change the profile - when clicking on the avatar just nothing happens. Google Sheets also lags sometimes - you literally can't do anything cause it barely scrolls...

I'm on MacOS Catalina right now. Who's experiencing this issue and how to fix it? Clearing browser data and cookies doesn't help. Is it related only to this version of OS, or same happens on BigSur?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

Make sure you have Content blockers disabled for Google to work:

  1. Visit google.com on Safari
  2. Go to the menu Safari --> Settings for google.com...
  3. Make sure Enabled Content Blockers is unchecked.
  4. Quit and restart Safari

This has alleviated many of the problems I faced with Google services on Safari 15.0

I just noticed that some strange things happen not only with safari. I use the Mimestream app for email and it started to behave strangely when it had to update the screen with some graphics effect like fold and unfold email thread. And I caught an idea that this might be not the issue of the safari itself, but the window manager or a framework, that mac os shared for the applications through the API (metal API? not sure.). And I noticed another nuance, that all such artifacts appear only when I use an app in a full-screen mode. At least I tried to reproduce the same issues in windowed mode (I usually use browser and mail app in full-screen mode) and here it is... looks like that this is a global "window manager" issue rather than a dedicated safari problem. As far as I know, this is a difference between Chrome and Safari. Chrome uses window manager (xserver or something) and Safari uses native mac os API...

@Mike, do you use full screen or windowed mode? Please try to reproduce the same in windowed mode from your side.

You can try switching to Firefox and google for a WhiteSur theme. It makes the browser very similar to Safari. As for me, I made CSS enhancements to my Firefox and now it looks very similar to Safari on Catalina. However, this doesn't solve some inconveniences: fonts are still rendered better on Safari, i can use quick Apple ID log in there, etc. etc. Do you know how can we reach someone from Safari devs here? Seems like they really don't test their products and read feedback, so maybe they're not aware of the issue.

The same issue for me!

Safari Version 15.1 (17612.2.9.1.20)

macOS Monterey Version 12.0.1

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Once I upgraded Safari to the latest version, even before jumping to Monterey, being on Big Sur, Google services started to lag: Gmail, all Google Workspace components, even google search. I have to switch to chrome from time to time because lags are impossible!

So, anyone found a solution? This is another glitch - Google Drive. When I open it, try tapping the profile circle to switch between profiles, nothing happens too, like in Google Ads:

Only after 1-2 minutes when i get back to Google Drive tab, it starts working. Anyone experiencing the same? I'm considering posting a feedback on apple.com/feedback every day, so maybe finally they will notice and fix this.

I agree! For me it's both design and integrity. Keychain is really important thing for me too. When Safari 15.0 was released, I was concerned, but I hoped they would fix it in the upcoming update. But then Safari 15.1 was released and the issue was still there... That's what made me nervous. Cause Google isn't just a minor service to ignore. I could understand if some users would complain about minor websites. But Google is something that is being used by millions of people.

Regarding the fact i'm using MacOS Catalina – I agree it's not the newest system, but still it is officially supported by Apple. Thus, it's inappropriate that the one of it's key features – a browser – doesn't function properly. What really surprised me is that BigSur and Monterey users faced the same issue... I thought they just made this for older Macbook Pro users to force them upgrading to a newer hardware, but now I realize maybe there's another issue.

I use full screen mode, but actually the bug appeared after updating from safari 14 to safari 15, not the macOS. So I put the blame completely on the new safari. The only reason I think this issue doesn’t get a proper attention is because older MacBook users do not represent the majority or Mac users, very few of them maybe use safari, so they just didn’t notice this issue.

Okay, i'm tired of this. Look, this is what happens when I use Google Search. Half page is not displayed and i can't click on any link or anything:

And after 15.1 update Instagram also started lagging. The chats randomly stop updating and when you close\open chat, it is displayed without the latest replies. Only reloading page is helping. I would already switch to Chrome, but all my passwords and cookies and stuff is stored in Safari, also it's convenient that i can switch between Apple devices using it. But the key websites I use simply don't work. Can anyone from Apple developers at least try using the new Safari?

It’s not the matter of design for me. I’m concerned about the integration. I use keychain and don’t want to switch on to 3rd party tools. Apple is about ecosystem for their products and here we see that this ecosystem has an issue.

In regards of reaching the devs out… I don’t know. I think they will see the thread only if it became popular.

And I don’t believe that they don’t know about this problems. I suppose they already work on solution, but I can’t install beta on this laptop to check. And if it’s not solved with upcoming release it would be very odd to me. I can’t get it if so large and strong corp as Apple doesn’t control their software QA. I would take it for alpha or beta, but it is a released version…
