I have an alert that read Update Apple ID settings that will not go away.

Go to Settings on your device and review the various things there.

Sometimes this is related to a method of payment you have entered that is no longer working properly. This document explains how to 'Change, add, [review,] or remove Apple ID payment methods' on a Mac or Apple mobile devices; click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT201266
