Mac Mini M1 5120 x 1440 Support

I want to be sure the M1 Mac Mini can support 49" Ultrawide monitors, specifically the Samsung Odyssey G9 and how it would connect to do that. I've seen a lot of youtube videos where people state it doesn't support these monitors without third-party software.

The Mac mini Video Spec’s are as follows.

Mac mini (M1, 2020) - Technical specifications

  • Simultaneously supports up to two displays:
  • One display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt and one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0

You would want to test that setup using a USB-C to Display Port cable to get odd sized Resolutions and then possibly more than 60Hz.

IMHO, that display needs to be driven by a Gaming Tower or eGPU, but sadly the M1 Mac’s do not support an eGPU.

Those spec’s are pretty clear.

At this point your options include,

  1. Buying an M1 Mac mini and testing that display for yourself using a USB-C to DisplayPort Cable. Then just return the M1 Mac mini within 14 day grace period if you are not happy.
  2. Keep what you currently have or move on to a PC that has a better GPU or one that you can upgrade.

Were you able to find a definitive answer to this?

I'd be pretty unimpressed if a computer with 8-core GPU, that retails for £899 even with a pathetically small SSD, couldn't push these kind of pixels at a decent refresh rate (120Hz minimum). eGPUs should be left in the 1990s where they belong and I believe the M1s don't support them anyway.

I'm even less impressed that Apple can't list supported resolutions and refresh rates.
