Safari Now Broken

Has anyone else found that the OS X Safari is now insufferable? The tab bar is impossible to control and one cannot eliminate the tab bar and retain a search field. I finally gave up on the entire matter and just made Google my Homepage and my only search field. (Hint: find a pinned tab, unpin it, delete it, and then restart the program. The tab will be back, pinned. Once you pin them, you can't get rid of them, particularly by following Apple's instructions.)

I was able to fix it.  Here is how I did it. I unpinned all the pins that are stuck. Then closed all the tabs. Now I have Safari running with no windows, just the app running. I just left it in that state. Do not Quit Safari. Let your computer run or sleep for more than 24 hours. Don't shut down. You can still use safari and open new windows and the tabs won't return. They only return if you QUIT Safari. I left Safari active with no windows open and the Mac on and let it sleep when not in use. I did this for more than two day. Now when I QUIT Safari or even restart the Mac, the TABS are gone!

The UI is the same , the tabs are either ⬆️ above ( compact ) or ⬇️ below ( separate ) the address / search bar . The new , separate bar is on by default … you can revert to the

old display : iPad OS 15 = settings … Safari … tabs … choose view .

macOS = Safari … view … show separate tabs .

🗂 For a more tidy interface on macOS , you can group the tabs : Safari … menu bar …

file … new tab group .

removing SafariTabs* just breakes function of pinned tabs, and it won't save state of pinned tabs.

for permanent fix, I tried to remove: (It will clear browsing history, cookie, settings like default search engine without keychain)

~ means your home folder, Press Command + Shift + . on Finder to toggle visibility of hidden file Like Library folder.

remove ~/Library/Safari folder and

remove ~/Library/SafariSandboxBroker folder and

remove ~/Library/SafariSafeBrowsing folder and

remove ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari folder and

remove ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari.CacheDeleteExtension folder and

remove ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.Safari folder and

remove ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.Safari.CacheDeleteExtension folder and

remove ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari folder and

remove ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing folder and

remove ~/Library/SyncedPreferences/com.apple.Safari-com.apple.Safari.UserRequests.plist file and

remove ~/Library/SyncedPreferences/com.apple.Safari.plist file and

remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.plist file and

remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.SandboxBroker.plist file.

Setting up new Standard or Admin user has no issues in Safari. Thats what gave me the clue that its related to user and iCloud services, caches related to safari and iCloud services for a user. I monitored user Library and sort by Date Modified. As I kept making changes in Safari these folders were moving up and down the list. Cache data was not updating properly. So I let the Mac do its maintenance. It's all related to the user. Anyway I remove all my PINNED Tabs so that I can start from scratch and add the only ones I want these days.

Glad that worked for you, but I've also tried that on my iMac Late 2013 and it did't work. I rebooted and it came back for me. I don't know but I'm glad it worked.

I've reverted back to Mac OS High Sierra which FIXED everything. Even iTunes Scroll Bar issue with View Column. In Catalina it would not move to where I click I have to grab the scroll bar and move it. H Sierra has solved everything, even the iCloud Keychain issue I has having in Catalina. My messages in the cloud would not sync after restoring in Catalina. This is an old Mac and I'm fine staying in High Sierra. Not moving to Mojave and Catalina. It will probably just break the iCloud Keychain again.

Well yes it works fine in Monterey. I have Macs running that version. Some of us have older Macs that can only update to Catalina as its highest compatible OS. Thats why this has been an issue with Catalina. I bought my iMac 2015. Apple decided its Vintage because the family model was introduced 2013. So Catalina is the highest it can go.

Yeah so Time Machine Reinstall just brings back the same issue on Safari. On another note I tried Set up as New on my iMac Late 2013 Catalina, but I ran into issue with signing in icloud loop. It would never allow me to sign in. Just password loop. I dont' know if its because its a Late 2013, but it was a mess.

So full System Restore Time Machine was the only way I can get everything back and have iCloud working again. Of course Safari is still broken. So I give up on Safari. I'm defaulting to Firefox. Imported all my Safari links. Only thing won't work is Keychain Password across devices, but I can easily get over that for a stable browser that ACTUALLY WORKS!
