Phone calls on 2018 iPad pro

I was delighted to discover that I can make and receive phone calls on my iPad, but being an old Techie, I would like to know why/how? I do have an iPhone 12 and the incoming calls are calling that phone number. My guess is that is why I can do this on a WiFi-only iPad, but would like to understand the technology.
