Workout on Watch: Can’t hear notifications any more on AirPods

Hello. For more than two years, I’ve had the same workout routine:

  1. Put in AirPods Pro
  2. Start playlist on iPhone
  3. Start running walkout on my Watch

When I did this, the workout notifications played on my AirPods — “workout paused,” “one mile,” and so on.

A few days ago, the behavior changed. The announcements are now coming through my Watch speaker, not that AirPods. I don’t like this one bit, mainly because I can’t hear the announcements because my AirPods are in (and also because I don’t like having my terrible pace announced to the people around me!)

I’ve done Apple Support with no help. I’ve checked all the settings, done hard resets of the phone and Watch, and even wiped the Watch clean and set it up as a completely new device.

Anyone else out there having the same issue? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I have the same issue. Brand new Apple Watch 7 and iPhone 12 Pro. All updated with latest iOS. Seems that having to disconnect Bluetooth from phone to AirPods is a workaround, not a fix. Has anyone found a true “fix”?

I am facing a similar issue but a little bit different . While jogging with my AirPods Pro and Apple Watch I am also listening music through prime music . When I finish a mile the Apple Watch blabbers mile completion minutes through airpod pro and then music automatically stops and does not start , I have to press play in Apple Watch at Amazon music and then music starts at phone and after 2 seconds starts streaming through airpod . I have switched off voice notifications for workout . Still this happens

Hi. Did you ever get some kind of answer to this? I posted something similar to this recently, and as you can see, without much help other than the usual reboot/repair/etc., all of which I tried. I'm not finding any pattern to why mine sometimes works, but usually doesn't. I will post here if I find anything out. Thanks.

This did not work for me. I remembered I did actually try this a while back, but after seeing your message, I decided to try it again. First, I had a lot of trouble even getting the Apple Watch to allow me to select the Apple AirPods using the Apple Audiobook app. It would just spin those white circles shaped in a circle. I tried killing all the apps on the Apple iPhone and Apple Watch, and repeatedly tried it. Eventually, it just connected to the Apple AirPods with the mp3 playing. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I think this only happened because the Apple Audiobook app on the Apple iPhone started. Anyway, went for a walk using the Apple Watch using the Apple Workout app, and all the notifications from the Apple Watch came from the Apple Watch. Nothing but the Apple Audiobook app playing could be heard through the Apple AirPods.
