Apple support told me “Got it thanks for letting me know! Yes since it's using up an older software Gabriel, you will need to use an older OS to sync the iPod again with a compatible macOS that has iTunes Store App or use a Windows PC that has iTunes Store app as well. I am sorry to hear about this but if you can borrow a PC from a friend / family member that you can try using their device to sync as an alternative.”

I have an iPod 5 generation.

thank you for your quick response. Unfortunately no menu appears when I click on it. It just displays three files on the iPod. I know how to show the hidden files but their does not seem to be any menu or way to simply sync or drag my library from Music to the classic iPod. And the iPod only shows “do not disconnect” message since it is plugged into the Mac Pro. Not sure what else to do.

I’ve run into a similar problem, connected my iPod 7th gen to my MacBook Pro to upload more music, only something happened to corrupt the music files I already had on it and my MacBook didn’t register the iPod. The iPod was fine, but it didn’t recognise the music files, but the hard drive had them on there, but not as music files. Did a hard reset, then reconnected, but the MacBook only recognised it as an external drive. Used Clean My Mac to repair the iPod hard drive, which sort of worked. I wiped the hard drive, it’s like new, my MacBook recognised it, but couldn’t connect. Said it needed to download the recovery software. Only Apple don’t have it anymore for my MacBook to download. Just had a very long, but unproductive hour long chat with Apple Support, who kept telling me to do everything I’d already tried then he (didn’t give me his name, suspect it was an Indian call centre) just gave up and told me to book it in for a repair, even though it’s a software issue. Really disappointed by this, last time I had a problem like this, they did a remote access on my MacBook and sorted it out.

When I connect my iPod classic to Big Sur it appears twice in the Finder sidebar, once as Steve's iPod, and again as STEVE'S IPO. Takes about 12 seconds for the two entries to show up. The second entry shows me the contents of the drive, the first one is for managing the device. I assume the second entry is there because I've enabled disk use.

In Finder > Preferences > Sidebar make sure you have a tick against CDs, DVDs and iOS Devices. When I untick this the first entry disappears.
