Big Sur's screen capture feature is stuck after closed

This was in another thread (see bottom image) but I am restarting the conversation as no one responded except someone saying they had never seen anything like it. I just want to say - here is another example.

This has happened more than a couple times now and I have only been able fix by restarting my computer. Escape does not fix it. Selecting a new area does not fix it (as you can see in the top image). Changing the Options in the screen capture feature do not do anything (i.e. Changing the Timer did nothing and Changing the Remember Last Selection did nothing as well). If I print from this webpage I am on right now, the printer will print the dimmed version—interesting! However, It is not reproduced in a screenshot when capturing the whole screen or window.
