in trying to clear my Mac for resale i ended up with a flashing folder with question mark. how do i fix it?

Hi, you wiped the OS from the boot drive and will have to therefore do a fresh OS install. The flashing folder and question mark is a decades old way for Apple's Macintosh computers to tell you that the OS and boot volume cannot be found.
