Unlocked iPhone with international carriers

if I purchase an iPhone directly from an Apple store, would I be able to use with a Japanese carrier since it’s going to be unlocked? Specifically for use with Softbank.

In theory, yes you can use an unlocked iPhone with different carriers.

In your case, you need to find out whether you can use a US Model iPhone in Japan. To confirm this, go to ➔ Which iPhone 13 Model Works Where. On this site, you will the available bands in the US and in Japan. Ensure that US model either has all of the listed bands in Japan or has most of them. It will also be useful to contact the carrier in Japan and ask them about a list of the bands that they use. You can cross-refer those bands with the US Model.
