I have an old iMac just upgrading to a new iMac 24inch - I still would like to plug my printer, CD burner and back up drive but they have the old connections as well as my iPhone 11 - bit confused with what is out there anyone know what do I need?

Since you have multiple devices I'd suggest getting a USB-C to USB-A hub.
You can try using a basic hub, but some users have reported needed a powered hub to support (bus-powered) drives and disk burners.
Check with OWC (MacSales.com) on their docks for the new M1 Macs. They are self powered and give you plenty of ports for peripherals. Contact their customer support for options for your Mac.
I'm just a very satisfied customer of OWC.
Likely USB A to USB C adapters. Amazon is your friend, they are cheap!
Instead of adapters you could get new cables. USB-C to USB-B for printer, CD and hard drive. USB-C to Lightning for iPhone.

You could purchase several USB-C to USB adapters: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple, or you could purchase a Thunderbolt dock, such as a CalDigit TS3 Plus Dock - Apple.
