Subtitles?

I have a French language film with separate English .srt subtitles which plays fine in VLC. However, I want to play it on my TV and I can't get the subtitles to appear.

Is there any way in FCP X that I can combine the film and subtitles so that they are a hard-coded part of the film and are permanently visible?

If not possible with FCP X, how else could I achieve this?

Problem Solved.

After numerous searches I discovered that VLC, HandBrake and a brand new free app called VideoProc Logger can do the trick.

Unfortunately, I couldn't follow the VLC instructions and HandBrake seemed very slow.

So I downloaded and used VideoProc Vlogger.

It has an interface resembling a pro editing app and uses hardware acceleration which got the job done in about half the time Handbrake takes.

Things are rarely simple!

It turned out that the subtitle delay was not constant. It was pretty much in sync at the start of the film but there was a 7 - 8 second delay by the end.

My solution was to retime the film using the Custom setting and drag the film out so that it was about 7 seconds longer resulting in the subtitles being in sync all the way through.
