How do I find flagged messages in mail. Seem to have disappeared. tried switching on/off filters but no good. Anyone ?

I can flag my emails (in Mac mail) but I cannot rename or add to my flags. They have disappeared out of the favourites side bar where my inbox, sent mail etc is. Please can you guide me how to restore.
I have tried every suggestion made in this thread and nothing works. I have just given up on having flagged email until Apple can do something about fixing this problem. P Phillips advice worked the first time I tried it, but then the flagged email disappeared again and I have not been able to retrieve them since. I don't understand though when there are problems which are as prevalent as these, why Apple takes so long to rectify?
I don't dig around in my hard drive often enough to be familiar with it. I finally found the MailData files. Deleting the envelope indexes didn't work. I relabeled to V8 and it is currently reindexing again. Please forgive the rookie question, but - by "any file" to you mean other envelope index files with the other suffixes as well? I am hoping that your solution will eventually help me, but I just needed clarification. Thanks, -T
Update: Now I'm missing all of my mailboxes from all my other accounts and rule folders. UGH I hate this
I used P. Phillips' solution and it worked for me as well. I encountered the same problem as others above with flagged emails still in my mailbox but unable to see or filter them when I selected the colored flag in the Flagged side menu. Thank you so much for a solution that took only minutes! Flagged emails are always the critical ones, and to suddenly lose the ability to easily find them was panic-inducing to say the least. Thanks again!!
Sorry I just did that no messages are shown despite me having 14 x red and 14 x green they aren't there.
I get 'No message selected' in the main right hand pane.

Same problem and none of the hopeful fixes worked. I tried them all. Flagged email WORK MAIL still missing. Bordering on frantic right now.
It would be nice to hear from someone who actually KNOWS what to do about this rather than helpful amateurs kind suggestions that ‘might’ work

Just as a final word. My version was also V9, but I had no problems with the solution. So happy that all of my flagged email is back. Thank you again.
I don't believe it!!!! ALL of my flags are gone again today. AUUUUUGH!!! I know how to get them back now, but am I going to have to do this every day?

so what if I've manage to clear all of the old flags , and now 2 x red and 1 x green flags have appeared? No file to show if you select view flags.
It's a mystery.
