Did you try these steps:
I'm starting to run out of ideas. Last thing I can think of is to force restart the Apple Watch by pressing simultaneously the Digital Crown and the side button until the Apple logo appears. Once done, try to repeat the steps above.
If all fails, try contacting Apple Support or stop by an Apple Store if one is near: Get Support.
this is an older watch which my son never linked to his current iPhone. So unfortunately i cannot control this watch with any of the iPhones we own. was hoping to erase the watch and relink it to an iPhone 12.
Yes, i tried that but unfortunately I only get as far as the "Power Off" option. (Even watched a YouTube video where it was demonstrated to make 100% sure I was doing this correctly.) When I press and hold the Digital Crown nothing happens. It simply goes back to the main watch menu. I also tried to hold "power off" on the screen to see if that would give me the Erase All Content option and that did not work either.
Any other thoughts?
Could you do it from your iPhone using the Watch app? Open the Watch app, tap General > Reset (toward the bottom) and then tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.
