Can’t do time machine back up to my WD Passport HD after installing Big Sur ?

Just upgraded to Big Sur. Using WD HDD Passport for Mac. Three tries it just keeps saying “preparing backup” and blue line keeps moving back and forth. It DID say it recognized backup drive selected. Will appreciate all ideas/help. Thank you.

backing for some unknown reason time machine does not recognise my external drive which is wd passport for mac drive. when i click "select back up disk" i get other air port time capsule and that's all , also when i click set up it goes to a "other wi-fi devices" .no configured airport base stations have been found.airport utility will continue searching. i am running big sur any help would be greatly appreciated

Time machine never completes backup P. Phillips, I read your post with interest as I have been experiencing ™ backup issues since I recently upgraded to Ventura. My original ™ external drive had worked with no issues. I thought I might as well reformat it and start with a fresh ™ backup for Ventura. Same issue, days and days of backing up with no end in sight. I started backing up to a fresh drive I know had no problems. Same issue days and days of backing up with no end in sight. Looking at the new ™ backup drive has an unfamiliar look to the files. Seems like on a daily basis it is trying to back up my whole drive?? I have taken some screenshots to see if you might be able to provide me with some direction, if so I appreciate it.

How is the Drive Formatted ?

It needs to be formatted into a format Catalina understands.

Is there any Third Party software that came Bundled with the Drive installed on the computer ?

How I is the drive connected to the computer ? Directly into the computer or through a USB Hub ?

After a large upgrade like that it can take a looong time to prepare the backup. If it is formatted correctly, as stated above, I recommend patience.
