MacBook won‘t turn on after Monterey install

MacBook pro 2019 after monterey update the computer won’t turn on at all.


tried the usual suspects (pram, pressing command-option-r etc.) but nothing. Computer is also perfectly powered but nothing, no chime, no harddrive sound just a dead computer after the monterey update.


seems like a computer without power but it is fully powered

Problem: you need a second computer with the same or an higher operating system version.


As I didn’t have a second machine with Monterey already running, I went to the Apple Store and they revived the T2 chip. Problem solved and I hope this will also help others who faced bricked computers after the Monterey install.

Same here. 2016 15" MBP, no T2 chip. laptop doesn't turn on at all. Already took to an Apple Certified Service center. They said only thing to do is to replace the motherboard.


I contacted Apple and they said they will give me a call with one of their engineers.


Unfortunatelly where I live there's no Apple Store, so can't just bring it in directly to Apple.

I’m interested in what their engineers say. I know some feel this is malicious, and I just don’t see that as the case. That being said it’s really sad that machines are being killed by this update. I personally will always by apple because I think it’s the best bang for the buck, I just hope they figure out a fix for these older machines.

It's more inept than anything else. There's a few problems here. Clearly there are hardware issues with a variety of MacBooks--quality control seems to be one problem. The OS update is clearly pushing some MacBooks to the limit too--where's the testing here? My biggest problem is the customer service, which has zero intention of getting to the root of the issue. The default answer for most people is pay up to continue using their products.


Why would I pay $500 for something that could break again on the next update? I'm a huge fan of Apple. Their computers are simply the best looking too. But all I got now is a year and a half old paperweight. Maybe I should have paid for Apple Care, but I wouldn't even want to pay the fee to repair this problem--this is entirely a problem of Apple's making.

As I posted earlier in the week, my 2019 MacBook Pro would not start a few days after I updated to Monterey. Nothing that I could do or the Apple Store did got it going again. The Genius Bar person on Sunday claimed the problem was "sand and dirt" inside the computer messing up the internals, but that didn't explain why my relatively new machine went cold dead. That was before postings in the Forum showed this was really due to the Monterey update, so I had to accept Apple's recommendation to have my computer rebuilt (out of warranty, with no Apple Care, unfortunately).

My computer was returned Thursday, and it definitely works. Their form explains what they did including,"We performed a clean installation of the latest Mac operating version verified on your computer." Amusingly, they did NOT do so. They did NOT install Monterey! Instead they installed Catalina. I can only assume that the Apple Repair specialists realized that it is NOT safe to install Monterey on MacBookPro's!

Same thing has happened to me in yet another part of the planet - and to my amazement, 2 conversations with Apple Support on Saturday 6th November, think they're in the Ireland, claimed that I was absolutely the only person that had reported this problem to them, they hadn't heard from one other person who'd had any problems with the Monterey update! Can this possibly be the truth?

No, I didn't think I would have been. No, I don't recall being given the person's name, I received a callback after having been onto the online chat. Even though I was on a landline the connection was very poor and it was very difficult to hear. It was a male and it was just before noon yesterday, Saturday, 6th November - but I'm sure there would have been lots of people fielding calls at that time.

So as I stated in an earlier post. My iMac doesn’t have the T2 chip but still got bricked. At the genius bar’s suggestion, I ordered a power supply. It was delivered today, and I installed it. Much as I suspected this was not the issue. So I’m looking for a logic board. As always will keep ya’ll appraised. As for apple fixing this I’m sure they will, but I don’t see them repairing a million PCs that are 3 or 4 years old. Just my opinion.

I have but will send another feedback.

I've also been in touch with the retailer from whom I purchased the device and they've advised: "This seems to be a very recent issue and after speaking to our apple rep in the branch he has advised in the first instance, calling apple support again as they now have more information on this than they may have had yesterday." This is why I tried Apple Support again - but no, they still don't appear to have any information at all on this - they even said they'd checked their "resources" whilst we were in touch and there was nothing - unbelievable, but what can you do? I'll just have to keep plugging away and hope I get somewhere in the end.

Insist, but with respect. Ask to be escalated to a senior support adviser, talk to them about the hundreds of cases on Apple forums and also on the news.

Yes, even tech news websites already reported on this.


If you just tried to go to an Apple Store, they won’t be able to help and authorize the service. You need to call and try to speak to a Senior Support Adviser
