My new M1 Pro MacBook Pro will be delivered today. Do I need to update my current MacBook to OS 12 to use Migration Assistant or can I leave it at 11.6? (I also have a Time Machine backup).
This would seem not required.
In the case Old is Big Sur and therefore every thing is already 64 Bit.
So move from 64 Bit on Old to New also 64 Bit is not an issue.
Move your content to a new Mac
Personally, if migrating from Intel based to new Apple Silicon M Chip - would only migrate User Account and nothing else.
Any oddities from Old to New - IMHO will migrate to the new and effectively cause issues on the New Machine .
Right. That's what I was planning on doing, just transfering preferences and documents. Most of my apps are cloud based anyway or bought off the Mac App Store so no need to transfer those.
But question is still open as to whether Migration Assistant requires both machines to have the same version Mac OS.

Definitely not. I used MA to move files from a 2009 iMac to an M1 iMac only a couple of months ago. It worked perfectly.
