My air pods first gen won't stay connected to iPhone or iPad for more than a minute or two without dropping off. BT says still connected. Tried reset, didn't work. Any advice out there?

Thanks but I have tried all of the suggestions on the site and the pods still drop off after a minute or two. This happens across devices, iPhone, iPad. These pods were misplaced and not uses for several months however they do have latest firmware.
I own a pair of air pods pro that work OK with the devices although they also seem to stop sometimes after a few minutes but restart when play button is pressed on device.
I also have had problems with the pro’s volume ramping up to max by itself while bike riding, any ideas here?
