iOS 15.1 broke connectivity to my car stereo

I own a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It has the factory default stereo in it.

The radio looks like this:

Prior to the iOS 15.1 update, when I plugged my iPhone Xr in to the car, the stereo would detect the iPhone, switch to it and I could play anything on the phone using a Lightning cable plugged into the car's USB port.

I took my wife's iPhone 12, which has iOS 14.8.1 on it, and it worked fine. I upgraded to 15.1 and again it stopped working.

I plug either phone in, they start to charge, but the stereo no longer detects the phone.

The obvious workaround is to just plug the aux cable into the headphone jack on the... Oh wait...

This is obviously a bug in iOS 15.1. I called Apple and reported it. I'm trying to send logs to Apple now.

The following are NOT correct answers:

  1. Get a new car
  2. Get a new car stereo

If you're going to say either of those in your comments, don't bother commenting.

If you've seen this in your car and have figured out how to fix it, please feel free to share.

If not, this is just a heads up that you may experience this issue if you have an older stereo in your car

I know I can use the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter, and that is my current workaround. But I can't do that and charge the phone at the same time, which is going to be a problem for long trips with GPS.

Join the club…15.1 screwed a lot of people up and took away the ability to play music through the USB. My hope is they fix this with the next update. I have contacted them and let them know my dissatisfaction with this! I would suggest you do the same. Like someone mention here Apple said to have the car manufacturer update the radio. That’s an idiotic response since how is the manufacturer to have a fix for something Apple broke the day before! Thankfully I have an old iPhone I use as an iPod and I can use it for now. But this needs to be fixed!

I’m having the exact same problem. I have a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro 2LT/RS. I’ve always used the USB port in the center console to listen to music/podcasts on my iPhone. Last night I blindly updated to iOS 15.1 from 14.8 and now I can’t get anything to play. I even switched to a Bluetooth audio connection and that cut out every five minutes or so. Extremely frustrating and unacceptable. I’ve never had this happen before until today. iOS 15.1 is garbage and needs to be replaced yesterday.

Chiming in to say I have the same issue on my 13 Pro Max. All was fine until I updated to 15.1 earlier this morning; haven’t been able to play music over Lightning in my 2013 Cruze since then.

I’ve tried restarting the device, using multiple Lightning cables, both official (including a brand new one as a control) and MFi-sourced ones — no dice.

Same here, after upgrading to ios 15.1 on iphone 7 256gb, USB audio stopped working in my 2010 Subaru Outback Limited with Harman Kardon sound system, 2005 Audi A4 with aftermarket iphone connectivity from Enfig Car Stereo and Marantz home cinema receiver. Only workaround I found to make it work in the Audi A4 is power off the iphone while car lightning USB cable is plugged. Power on the phone and it works until you turn off the car or unplug the iphone. Phone charges if plugged back but no audio connectivity.

Come on Apple, do something... It seems a pretty major bug here!

I have a 2012 Camaro SS and this happened to me after the 15.1 update. I’ve tried numerous USB cords, restarting my car, restarting my phone and even resetting my phone. NOTHING! So frustrating Apple, step up your game!

I ordered an aux cord so that until this is fixed I can at least listen to my music. I really hope this is fixed soon, I’m following this thread. We shouldn’t have to upgrade our stereos, we should be able to use our phones that cost so much! RIDICULOUS!

Thanks for posting this, amp68. Been frustrated with this same problem since updating to 15.1. I have an iPhone6s and same 2014 Chevy Cruze. Can no longer play iPhone through car stereo. Spoke on the phone with a woman at Apple Support a week ago, but she wasn't able to help me and didn't seem to know there was a problem. Glad to know it's not just me. I'll try calling them back and let them know I'm not alone with this problem.
