iOS 15.1 broke connectivity to my car stereo

I own a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It has the factory default stereo in it.

The radio looks like this:

Prior to the iOS 15.1 update, when I plugged my iPhone Xr in to the car, the stereo would detect the iPhone, switch to it and I could play anything on the phone using a Lightning cable plugged into the car's USB port.

I took my wife's iPhone 12, which has iOS 14.8.1 on it, and it worked fine. I upgraded to 15.1 and again it stopped working.

I plug either phone in, they start to charge, but the stereo no longer detects the phone.

The obvious workaround is to just plug the aux cable into the headphone jack on the... Oh wait...

This is obviously a bug in iOS 15.1. I called Apple and reported it. I'm trying to send logs to Apple now.

The following are NOT correct answers:

  1. Get a new car
  2. Get a new car stereo

If you're going to say either of those in your comments, don't bother commenting.

If you've seen this in your car and have figured out how to fix it, please feel free to share.

If not, this is just a heads up that you may experience this issue if you have an older stereo in your car

I know I can use the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter, and that is my current workaround. But I can't do that and charge the phone at the same time, which is going to be a problem for long trips with GPS.

I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze and have the same problem. I always just leave the usb cord plugged into the usb slot in the center console and get in the car and plug my phone it and the iPod iPhone words always pop up on the screen then my music shows up and plays perfect I use Spotify. The other day I updated to iOS 15.1 on my iPhone 11 and when I plugged my phone in it started charging but nothing popped up and couldn’t get my music to work thought something was wrong with the car at first but after seeing so many people with the same vehicle complain about the same thing I know it’s the iOS 15.1 update. I can’t downgrade back to iOS 15.0.2 because apple signed it off so I’m praying there is an update asap that fixes this issue or I’m going to just get a new Galaxy phone since I’m eligible for to upgrade. Please fix this immediately apple

No one's saying that, but as part of the process it always makes sense to check if the firmware of your car/radio can be updated and if there is an update available.

Myriad issues over time, especially with CarPlay, have been resolved that way but most car dealers treat them as something they will only do if you complain of an issue, they won't just update your firmware when you take your car in for scheduled maintenance.

Likewise for aftermarket systems; you won't know there is an update unless you explicitly check the head end manufacturer's website.

Car production designs may be old but iOS 15.1 is a <0.1 update only.

Monterey has a Rosetta Emulator for backward compatibility for software over a decade old? I’m sure a USB 1 or 2 emulator is very light (existing) coding here.

But I expect this issue is just a very embarrassing human error to the millions of Apple Users who must be affected.

I have an iPhone 13 and a 2017 Chevy. I’ve never been able to play through usb. So frustrating. Went to the Apple store and they were absolutely no help. They told me to go to the dealership, which will just charge me a lot of money to look at this issue which seems to be an Apple issue if the older phones work. Older phones can play through my car. I’ve been using a lightning adapter and an aux cord, but the phone can’t charge like that and I can’t use my wheel controls to change the music (has to be done on the phone). I did update my iOS, but it hasn’t worked since day 1.

I am having the same issue. I have a 2012 chevy cruze with the same radio and use the usb connector to play music through my iphone 11. it was working fine until I updated to ios 15.1.. I even bought a new iphone charger, a genuine one to ensure it would work. It charges but won’t connect. Music does play on iphones that don’t have the new update.. Any fixes?

As mentioned before, I suspect that there is some logic in the head end that assumes that if it can connect to a device via Bluetooth, it will allow you to connect to the radio via USB to charge the device but will not then use USB for the audio connection.

A great analog is the Apple Magic Trackpad. If you connect the charging cord to a USB port, the computer can talk to the trackpad via USB as a USB device, but most of the time it will only use USB to charge the trackpad and will instead talk to it using Bluetooth.

Hey, amp68! I also have a 2014 Chevy Cruze and I recently updated my phone and am having the same frustrating issue! I tried resetting my phone - don't do it, it didn't work! So today I was trying to problem solve and I came up with a solution. Next to my USB input in my center console of my car, there is an AUX input. I have a 3.5mm male to male cable I plugged into the AUX input in the console, then I plugged my lightening to 3.5mm female into the other end of the male to male cable. I plugged the adapter + cable into my phone and the screen on my Chevy Cruze now says "AUX Jack In". I can play music through my car stereo now with these cables and adapter, and I can also use Google Maps through it too. I know this is a lot of steps for a workaround for this issue, but it worked for me. I really believe this may be a 15.1 issue, so hopefully it resolves by 15.2

If you want to charge your phone while using the AUX input, get a Magsafe charger + a USB C female to USB A male and charge it that. Again, I know this is A LOT of steps and for me I had all of these cables and adapters lying around to do so - but hopefully 15.2 will solve all of this.
