Unable to add my Gmail account in OS X Mail app ...

Whether I go into my mail icon or though system preferences and try to add my gmail account to my list of email accounts on my MacBook Air I can't add it. I click on the gmail icon and enter my username and PW and then check off the apps I want to add to this account such as mail, calendar, notes etc and hit done. It looks like it sends and remains on the screen until my only other option is to hit cancel and the account isn't ever added yet I get an email every time from google security saying my macbook is trying to access my account so I know it's sending the info but my Mac isn't putting it on mac mail. This has been going on for months now and likely occurred when i did the update to High Sierra but not sure if that is the exact time this happened. I used to have gmail on my computer until recently when I was having issues, deleted it and couldn't ever re-add it since.

If Mail on your Mac keeps asking for your password

Your email provider needs you to update or reset your password for security reasons. For example, if you're using Google’s two-step verification, your Gmail account in Mail requires the appropriate app-specific password.

Yes, I use the 2 steps.

Like I wrote, when creating a new gmail account in Mail on my iMac, I am asked, in a new Safari window, to log into gmail. After entering username and password (a good password) the window freezes and I am left with only the Cancel button. Gmail never resumes or gets back to Mail acknowledging that my login in verified.

The account cannot be blocked since I was able to use it from my iPad and my iPhone. Probably a «monster cookie» blocked somewhere in some hidden file on my iMac.

I discovered another discussion with the same problem and no solution was given. To clear this out, I created a new gmail account and was able to mount it on all my devices.

My problem is solved without any clue to gmail hanging.
