changing from 4th gen to a 5th gen do i need a sim card

If your 5th generation iPad is a Wifi+Cellular model, you can contact your cellular carrier and subscribe a data traffic plan (bearing in mind that on iPads you can use cellular data when a Wifi Network is not available, but you can't use the SIM card for phone calls).

If you already have a SIM card for iPad 4th gen (which uses a micro SIM), contact the carrier and ask them for a new nano SIM card) as per this support article:--> Learn which size SIM card your iPhone or iPad uses - Apple Support
