MacBook Pro 16" (2021) M1Pro Charging issue?

Just bought the 16" MBP M1Pro and noticed when I "shutdown" the MacBook, close the lid, plug in the supplied MagSafe charger to the Mac, the MagSafe indicator light flashes amber and making a connect/disconnect sound from the Mac. Now if the Mac is powered on, charging works as it should. Spoke with Apple Support on this and they have no clue on this type of issue. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Keep an eye on it to see if it comes back. I went with the battery optimization option knowing that if all else failed i could charge though usb-c. Still sucks though, you never want to worry about any new product especially at this price point and I hate going to the Apple store. I'd either deal with it or try to get a replacement online before going to the store so I can stand there with my laptop like a loser until someone notices me.

I have 2 of them with same issues: MacBook Pro 16 2021 M1 Pro and M1 Max charging issues with MagSafe 3 140W form Apple, while turned off. Not charging, left for 30 minutes and same issue. Restarted, same issue.

Both are having same problems, Apple support unable to help.

One is MacBook Pro16 2021 M1 Pro 16 GB ram 1 TB

Second is MacBook Pro 16 2021 M1 Max 32 GB ram 1 TB

The majority of the complaints on this discussion are about Macs that charge, then stop, then start, then stop -- in a span of seconds, especially when connected to power after being shut down.

The winning suggestion is to disable "Battery Health Management" feature, and the problem goes away.

OR exchange your Mac for a different one.

Thanks for the feed. It's a growing number of folks and you're right, at this point there would be no reason to exchange the book since the problem still persist in the replacements. I think people should still report it to Apple for awareness of the situation and hopefully address it by a firmware/software update or a new updated power brick. BTW - still waiting for me replacement to arrive.

The funniest part of this whole issue is that Apple (most valuable company in the world) who is probably already working on a fix for this can't bother to tell their support about the issue or acknowledge the issue at a very basic level. So instead they'll have customers of one of their most expensive products go to their stores where apple associates (who arent aware of the problem) will swap out entire units which cost in excess of two thousand dollars for the base model.

*shrug*

I am positive now that all of the MacBooks have this issue and it is related to the fast charging.

I picked up a second MacBook from an Apple store in a different state and it has the issue as well. So it is most likely from a different batch and still has it.

The reason why the Apple store employees are unaware of this issue is because the MacBooks on display at the store are always plugged in and on. So they will not get the chance to see the MacBooks charging behavior when the battery is below 80% and off.

I do not recommend keeping it past the 14 day return window. Years ago when I purchased a MacBook it had an issue with the audio. I kept the MacBook because I was waiting for a software fix that never happened. So the MacBook was as good as a paperweight since I wanted to use it for audio. Apple was reluctant to help me because they didn’t want to invest the time into fixing it because it was an intel MacBook and they knew M1 was coming.

Rest assured if you kept it past the 14 day window. Because it is such a widespread problem, I think they will fix it. But I will be returning the second one until this issue is fixed to make sure I’m not stuck with a broken MacBook again.

Fwiw. I've had my mbp m1 max 1tb 32gb ram 16" for 5 days. Just noticed this issue an hour ago. I guess I just left it on while charging the past few days and never noticed until now.

In anycase. I've had my unit in "automatic" battery mode... charging blink and bleep occurred when shutdown w lid closed.

I switched it to "High power" mode, shut down laptop- Closed lid, connected mag safe and now its charging... no bleeps or flashing lights. Can anyone else try this to confirm?

One person on reddit claims that he did reset SMC on his/her MBP 16 M1 Pro with this instruction: https://i.imgur.com/kadWG0R.jpg and now everything works fine for him/her.

I know how it sounds (SMC on MBP 16 with M1 chip etc.) but here you have a link to relevant comment on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/macbook/comments/qnfwxr/comment/hken6hj/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Just sharing as maybe somehow it works overall. I know there is no way of resetting SMC on M1 - officially.

Totally agree! I just received my replacement today and out-of-the-box it performs normal under macOS 12.0. When I updated to 12.0.1, the issue re-appeared. Sounds like it to me it's OS/firmware related and not hardware. I'm sure Apple is aware of the situation and a fix will be released in future OS updates. In the meantime enjoy your new book!
