It depends on the carrier and/or the plan that was subscribed with that carrier.

You can try to insert a different data SIM Card, but if it doesn't work, you must contact Sprint and ask them to unlock your device (if you're eligible) to be used with a different cellular provider.

SIM cards are generally provisioned for either a mobile phone (such as iPhone) or, for iPad and other tablet computers, as a DataSIM. Although a few will work with a tablet computer, many mobile phone SIMs won’t work at all with iPad.

WiFi+Cellular models of iPad purchased directly from Apple are unlocked - and, with an appropriate DataSIM, can be used with most Cellular networks.

Conversely, some iPad devices purchased from a Cellular Carrier may be subsidy-locked to that network - at least for a minimum contractual term. Subsidy-locked devices cannot be used with other Cellular networks until the subsidy-lock is removed - which may incur payment of a fee. If this is the case, you will need to speak will the Cellular provider to whom the iPad is locked for cellular service.

In summary, you simply need to install the SIM and what happens. This will inform your next steps.
