unauthorized text messages sent from iPhone

Our daughter received 3 text messages from our iPhone last night that we had not sent. The messages show on the phone screen. We had sent her a text just prior to her receiving these unauthorized texts. I have heard of spoofing, but these messages show on our phone just as though we had sent them. How can this happen and what should we do about it. As far as we know no one else has received similar messages from us.

bandaid01,

We understand the concern. This behavior is consistent with someone else having gained access to your account. Wed' be unable to speculate too much as to how, but if you use the same password for your Apple ID as you do for other sites, it is probable that password was obtained through a data breach of one of those sites.

Regardless, the recommendation remains the same. We'd advise changing your Apple ID password for your account first, and enabling two-factor authentication. The latter step provides a measure of protection where even if your password is compromised again, a third party still can't gain access to your account without explicit authorization from one of your already signed in devices.

Take care.

Hi bandaid01,

To make sure we're on the same page, your daughter received a text from your contact, but it was not actually from you, is that correct?

If so, and the messages also show on your iPhone, someone may have access to your account and is sending texts posing as you. The easiest way to resolve this is to change your Apple ID password, and then enable two-factor authentication on your account if it is not enabled.

Changing your password kicks anyone in your account out, and enabling two factor requires a trusted device to allow any new device to access your account.

You can see how to change your Apple ID password and more info on two-factor authentication in the articles below.

Cheers!
