Can I add nicknames to contacts in a group chat with iPhone?

I am in a groupchat with a couple friends and I just wanted to know if there is any way to add nicknames to the groupchat like you can in Facebook messenger.

I'm not 100% its in the right topic but I looked through them all and couldn't find iMessage so I figured using iPhone is close enough.

I know how to change the group name itself, I more meant the people in the group. Without actually going in and changing contact names. Thank you for trying to help though!
