After upgrading to macOS Monterey, Sidecar disappeared from my iMac

I've used Sidecar extensively on my iMac 5K Late 2015 model, but when upgrading to Monterey, that disappeared. There is no longer any Sidecar icon in the System Preferences, and I can't find my iPad Pro as a device to extend my desktop to.

When I boot the same computer back in Big Sur, it works great and finds my iPad on the network without any problem, this happens only in Monterey. I've double check all Apple ID settings, I am logged in with MFA and Airdrop works as it should, bluetooth and wifi all set up correctly.

Is this a bug, or is this by design?

The function still exists. But they simply removed it as a separate icon in Sys Pref. Now it's housed under DISPLAYS in SYS PREF. Click ADD DISPLAY and you should be able to see your iPad as an external monitor. Choose it and sidecar function gets activated. I think they have remapped it this way to prepare for Universal Control. Should have given users the heads-up. I almost downgraded my OS back to Big Sur if I had not discovered the hidden sidecar.

Yes, Sidecar has indeed been transferred to the Displays section, but with Cisco Anyconnect installed only Airplay 2 devices (Apple TV's and my Samsung M5) were visible, not the iPad Pro. When I uninstalled AnyConnect, the iPad Pro re-appeared back in this menu.

Also there was no difference if the VPN was on or off, this happened even with the VPN off. It somehow filters all the traffic, and does not pass the needed information for macOS Monterey to detect it.

I wanted to share my specific solution because I had this issue while using ExpressVPN on my Macbook Pro w/ Monterey (Intel Core i7). At first, I couldn't use my iPad as a second display when I disconnected the VPN (not uninstalled, just disconnected). Per the advice from Rasmus above, I deleted ExpressVPN from the Macbook completely and re-connected my iPad as a second display (control panel > screen mirroring > display preferences) which worked! I still want to have the VPN, though, so I then re-installed ExpressVPN to test whether it would work after re-establishing the connection with the iPad, but while connected to the VPN server (same location on both the Macbook & iPad) I could no longer connect to the iPad. However, now once I disconnected the VPN (not uninstalled), the display worked. Now I can still have my VPN on the computer but just have to disconnect when I want to use the second display.

I'm seeing the same issue, in addition to my iPad Pro not being shown as a selection option to connect to for screen share. When I screen share to my iPad Pro, the screen becomes frequently frozen, preventing me from using my keyboard or mouse. The only method I've discovered to resolve this is to disconnect and reconnect it, but the issue will recur around every 30 minutes. Is it possible to resolve this?

I can confirm similar erratic behaviour as described, frozen display on the iPad, missing cursor, dropping the connection. On my Late 2015 iMac, I also noticed that occasionally, I get a "Universal Control (beta)" box in the Control Panel, even if my computer should not be supporting it. So very buggy at the moment, it seems, and like Oliverjl suspected, I also wonder if the new codebase is the reason for the latest bugs?

I also have AnyConnect installed, and am still able to set my iPad Pro (11inch M1) as a display. My version of AnyConnect is 4.10.01075. I did have to connect via USB-C the first time to see the iPad, but can now connect wired and wireless. n

I can connect wired regardless of VPN connection status as well. However in order to connect wirelessly, I do have to use AnyConnect to connect to the same VPN.

In my opinion the AnyConnect uninstall answer should not be marked as the solution, since it is still possible for myself, and maybe others to add an iPad Pro as a display in Monterey with AnyConnect installed.

Turns out this error was caused by having Cisco AnyConnect VPN installed. Even if it's not running and routing network traffic, just having it installed kills Sidecar.

When uninstalled the iPad showed up again.

The peculiar thing is that other Airplay devices are not suffering here, only the iPad, as my Apple TV's and Samsung was working just as normal.
