Numbers : Countif Function : Total number of times a text occurs in selected columns

Good day there,

I have a table with drop down menus for peoples names. They occur every every 4th column (in pink). I want to have a function which allows me to 'total-up' how many times the name appears during the month.

At the moment I am using ... =COUNTIF(C2:C32;"=Terry Le Long") which works great for 1 column, BUT, I also want to know IF he appears, and therefore should be counted, when in columns G and K as well. He isn't always the first person of the day.

Every time I select multiple columns, click and drag technique, and hit enter, the formula comes back with a Red Triangle indicating an error.

Please can anyone advise,

Many thanks, and best regards,

Danny M.

With the data shown in your screenshot, you should be able to span all the columns, including the ones that don't have names in them. I'm not sure what you are doing with click and drag that is not working but this formula should count the occurrence of the name in all three of those pink columns:

=COUNTIF(C2:K32;"Terry Le Long")
