I have Big Sur on my MacBook Air 2018. I want to keep my software current. But I can't seem to download Monterey (insufficient space). Is it supposed to replace Big Sur? Do I have to delete Big Sur first? Why would I want Monterey? I wouldn't use what it offers. Help?

Then there is no reason to upgrade until Apple no longer makes update to Big Sur. You want to keep the security features up to date.
If you want to take the risk to have a brick laptop like it happened to me, you can do it. Mine was revived with DFU procedure by wise Apple Store technician. You can find many people here having this problem and some told to replace components. If your Big Sur works I suggest you stay with this system until they solve the Monterey strange problems
