I removed a device from my account and it will no longer allow me to reset it. How can I reset it?

I removed a device from my account and now want to wipe the phone before recycling, but it will no longer permit me to do this. Do I need to add it back and how to I do this? It is an iPhone 5.

Do you have access to the device? If so, you can do the reset on the phone itself. See here: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
