SSD died.
Battery died.
Display died.
Battery and Display were replaced by Apple for free. Thank you.
SSD replacement covers only 2017-2018 models.
Monterey can't be installed on non original SSD. Thank you.

I was able to install Monterey on an external non-Apple SSD (500GB Samsung T5) via a stand-alone Monterey installer (followed by the Migration Assistant to recover user files and settings from a Time Machine backup).

What do you mean they replaced for free display and battery, but not SSD?
Just tried install Monterey on my 2016 15" MBP, all original, and it died as well. Will take it to service this week.

Yes, that's correct. Once I was satisfied with Monterey, I reinstalled it on the internal SSD. However, I first moved Big Sur from the internal SDD to the external SSD.
BTW, the Samsung T5 connects to the Mac mini via a 10Gb/s link (USB 3.1 (Gen 2), a.k.a. 3.2). I have seen some very fast transfer rates for large files.

To Pie: and then you've installed it to fast internal SSD? Samsung T5 has 500 MB/s. Internal SSD – 3500 MB/s.
