Since I upgraded to OS Monterey the login screen after I start my laptop shows the purple shades that are literally called "Monterey"
I really don't like the colors! Looking through system preferences I don't see a way to change the image.
Icon yes, but not the screen? Is there something I'm missing? How can I change the image?

This is the suggestion I found that didn't work for me. Maybe it works for somebody else.
I am having a similar problem, except my login/Lock Screen is stuck on the CHROMA RED wallpaper.
When I login, the wallpaper is set to the Monterey. The purple default one. But if I restart my MBP and get to the login, I'm seeing this ugly red one. I tried all the tricks on YouTube, and the ones listed here. Nothing works to change it.

I’ve just found out the reason why I get a personal login wallpaper, it’s because I’m a single user with guest user login turned off. With guest user turned on it does show the default purple wallpaper.

BTW, what bugs me most is that I live on the Monterey Bay. I can literally see Monterey across the water, it never ever looks pink and purple. I don't understand the color palette, it's absolutely ridiculous.
Don't know if you are talking about the login screen (where you wouldn't see thru system preferences) since you haven't logged in to get to system preferences.
But if you are looking to change your desktop color or other ways to have it look go to to system preference>desktop and screen saver, click on desktop and click any number of choices.
Googling seems to show that it is not possible to change it in Monterey. I followed the instructions for previous macOS versions and they do not work for Monterey.
Under Big Sur I changed my desktop wallpaper to one of my own pictures and it also showed as the wallpaper on login. After upgrading to Monterey it is still the same. So all I can suggest is to set your wallpaper to one of your own pictures and see if it appears on the login screen.
I think you are talking about the Lock Screen background which is also your Desktop wallpaper. the the background you get when you rest a Mac. You can change your Lock screen background.

Good to know that. I am one of three users with guest.
I’m not by my computer at the minute but what might be possible is to search for an image with the title Monterey, and replace it with a personal image with the title changed to Monterey. I don’t know if this would cause problems so backup first (Time Machine). This obviously depends on the generic login image being titled Monterey in the first place.
Only things on my Mac titles Monterey is a copy of the Monterey installer and the Monterey screensaver. If I click on the screensaver it says it is already installed and can't be changed.
When I’m next on my computer I’ll see if I can find the file it loads on login.
Most of the instructions I've seen only works on single user Macs. I have multiple users on a MacPro. I'm guessing the UUID locks the login screen to a single user. If there were a way to determine the UUID of "root" that might help.
