iPhone 12 HDR, change Color Space Override to Rec. 2020; sometimes works sometimes doesn't

Hello. I'm an amateur using Final Cut Pro for over a year now. Recently got an iPhone 12.

The iPhone 12 videos I drag onto the timeline have a problem with the color, excessively yellow.

I read a few articles, and watched a few YouTube videos on the matter and found the suggestion to change the "Color Space Override" to Rec. 2020

Most of the time, this solves the issue and I carry on and complete my projects.

Rarely, and in my current predicament, the project will spontaneously revert back to that excessive yellow color while I am adding effects or titles, etc. and when I go back to the Color Space Override, it is still on Rec. 2020. I will try each of the different options in the drop down menu of Color Space Override but it does not correct the issue.

I did not change anything about my iPhone's video recording settings, so I do not imagine that these problematic files are different video file formats than the ones that are corrected by simply switching Color Space Override to Rec. 2020.

Within the same timeline, I may add another video file recorded from the same iPhone, and the other video file (initially excessively yellow) will be corrected. The other file that was originally excessively yellow, corrected with Rec. 2020, and spontaneously reverted back to being excessively yellow despite it's Color Space Override still being on Rec. 2020 is not being corrected. I will delete the file from the timeline and drag the file back into Final Cut Pro from my Desktop, and Final Cut Pro receives it as being excessively yellow and Color Space Override already on Rec. 2020.

Here is About my Mac

macOS Monterey Version 12.0.1 (just updated yesterday, and this problem has been happening before and after the update)

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

Processor: 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

Memory: 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5500 M 4 GB, Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Thank you for your support

And, please respond in layman's terms as I will not understand suggestions with professional terminology and abbreviations.

Open one of the clips in the QT player and post a screenshot of the inspector window.

Unless you can do this there is no way to provide any assistance.

Color Space Override should not be changed if the Color Profile is displayed correctly in Video inspector. The Color Profile can be seen in General in the inspector, not in Basic. Override should only used in the rare cases when the Color Profile is incorrect.

The library must be set to wide gamut if you're working with HDR media.

Make sure the Viewer View menu is set to Show HDR as Tone Mapped.

All your media should have the same Color Profile and settings if nothing was changed. HDR is not the default setting on the iPhone.

Do you want to output HDR or SDR? If the former you work in an HDR project; if the latter use an SDR project and HDR Tools to correct for the difference in color space.

Sorry Tom, that video was informative and I played with everything it suggested but it is not the solution.

All I ended up doing to correct the previous video's problem was to put the original video file into iMovie - not even edit anything - and just click export file, and use that video file in Final Cut Pro, and it did not give me the same problem.

New project, same problem happening:

A couple weeks have gone by and I have filmed something else, about 7 minutes in one video file. I put it into Final Cut Pro and made some edits (simply cut some parts out). Put my computer to sleep, and woke up the next morning to continue. Now some of the clips are spontaneously in these totally off highlighted colors, and the other clips from the same original file are unchanged.

Though I do appreciate your efforts to help me, the changing my library properties to wide gamut has resulted in lower quality output for my videos that are not having the aforementioned issue with color adjustments.

What I mean is, projects I am completing using video clips (coming from the same iPhone 12) that are not having the excessive yellow color are now coming out in a lesser quality as compared to the original clip (even though I am selecting 1080p | rate: 60p). But before I switched the library properties to wide gamut, this was not happening.

I do not know what has suddenly become disturbed in my Final Cut Pro performance.

Ok, one at a time. What is QT player?

Earlier I sent you a screenshot of my entire Final Cut Pro screen including the player and inspector window. In the screenshot, it shows the face of the person excessively bright yellow. If that is not a screen shot of the QT player, what is? Do you mean for me to open the original video clip using QuickTime Player and open inspector?

Rec 2020 HLG is one of the options in Color Override

However, I have been using "Rec 2020" to color-correct all of my iPhone 12 video clips imported into Final Cut Pro, even though Rec 2020 HLG has shown up as a selectable option.

Rarely, as in the case for me asking the question in this thread, the video clip will be corrected and then spontaneously revert back (..repeating my initial post at the top of this thread).

I have not been using Rec 2020 HLG

Better quality would be preferred as long as it does not create so many delays and trip hazards to get there

As you see, I have switched the Color Override to off, but it is not changing anything about it. I also noticed at the top arrow that it has remained on that HDR 2020 HLG.

I have tried starting new Projects with different Codec settings at the initial pop-up window and I've gotten the clip to now be in a more reddish hue, but nothing acceptable.

As a side-note, this clip I am having trouble with was recorded in the same room with the same lighting as another clip. Two patients were treated in the same room. I recorded one, pressed stop, recorded the other. Both video clips appear perfectly normal in QuickTime Player. One of the clips has no issues in Final Cut Pro. The other one is having this color problem in Final Cut Pro. No settings/lighting/camera/etc were altered. And again, the clip plays totally fine on QuickTime player.
